Currency risk management refers to the strategies and tools businesses use to protect themselves from the financial impact of exchange rate fluctuations. For corporates engaged in international trade, currency risk arises when dealing with foreign currencies, which can unpredictably gain or lose value relative to their home currency.

Millbank FX specialises in delivering customised currency risk management solutions to corporate clients. Our team combines decades of experience with cutting-edge technology to minimise uncertainty, protect profit margins, and maintain competitive pricing in global markets.

Overview:

Fineline is a global supplier of PCB technology backed by its PLC parent company listed on the Shenzhen stock exchange. It has offices throughout Europe, MENA and Asia.

The challenge

The company has costs in USD but primarily generates revenue in EUR. From order placed, to client settlement, there is a 4-month lead time where the company was exposed to currency fluctuations. Historically, each of the international office would manage their currency requirements independently.

Solution:

Tailored hedging strategy based on the clients’ commercial requirements, cash flow forecast and risk appetite.

Dedicated dealing team monitoring performance of the strategy to ensure goals are met.

Ongoing review and consultation with client to optimise process and compare forecast against actual trading figures.

Results:

Certainty over costs.

Formalised and measured approach.

Profit Margins improved.

Frequently asked questions

01
What is currency risk management?

Currency risk management is the process of identifying how exchange-rate movements affect your business and using strategies — such as forward contracts, market orders and natural hedging — to reduce that impact. The aim is certainty over costs and protected margins, not speculation on where rates will go.

02
How much of our FX exposure should we hedge?

Most businesses start by hedging 50–80% of their forecast exposure — the portion they are confident about — leaving the remainder flexible. As the year progresses and forecasts firm up, cover can be increased. The right level depends on your cash flow certainty and risk appetite, which your dealer will work through with you.

03
Do forward contracts require a margin deposit?

It depends on your business's financial position and the credit line requested. Forward contracts are binding derivatives and may require collateral if rates move against your position — this is explained clearly before any contract is agreed.

04
How is a hedging strategy kept up to date?

Through regular reviews — typically monthly or quarterly — comparing your forecast exposure against actual trading figures and adjusting cover accordingly. This keeps the strategy aligned with your business as order books, suppliers and markets change.

05
Does hedging mean we might miss out on better rates?

Hedging provides certainty at a fixed rate, regardless of where the market moves. That is its purpose: a blended approach (hedging part of your exposure) keeps flexibility on the remainder, but no strategy can capture certainty and unlimited upside at the same time.
